Wargames Scenery / Terrain – Rivers

One thing that is guaranteed to alter the dynamics of a wargames battlefield is a river. Most gaming systems have some concept of dangerous terrain rivers usually fall slap bang into the middle of that particular category. In other words, if a river splits your table in half, then the game is likely to end up all being about one side crossing the river and the other attempting to repel any river crossings. There are so many ways you can build terrain around a river - is it a wooded river valley? A steep sided rocky gorge? A gentle rolling plain? Is there perhaps a hamlet there ? Whatever way you choose to set out your terrain around the river, the best kind of river to have is a sectional one. That is, the river itself is made up of a number of pieces of terrain that can fit together in different ways. I'd suggest you'd want straight pieces and gentle curves - that way you can alter the layout of the river and other terrain on your gaming table between games. Rivers always make for interesting games in my opinion - even if they are fordable, there is always the chance of losing troops and equipment in the crossing. If they can't be crossed like that, and you have a bridge - then the game will likely turn on taking that bridge or defending it at all costs.

Rivers can be made with suitably cut and painted sections of MDF or hardboard, using cut polystyrene foam, acrylic decorators filler or similar to make the banks. A coat of gloss varnish will make for a good water effect. Alternatively, you can use any of the specialist water effects that you can buy, made specifically to use in making wargames scenery. A thin layer of this looks very effective. Add some small rocks in the flow of the river and use filler to make the foam of water rushing round them - let your imagination run wild! If this all seems like too much hard work, you can buy ready made river sections that just need painting, or sometimes even ready painted too.

Whatever way you go, I'd suggest adding a river to your wargames scenery collection.

Wargames Scenery / Terrain – Bunkers

A common feature of battlefields in the 20th century and later wars is the concrete bunker and their relatives, such as the pill box. As such, they make a great addition to any WW2 wargames terrain you may have. Also, the concrete bunker is quite at home in many science fiction / future wargames scenarios - fitting quite well as Warhammer 40K terrain for example. They can be pretty simple to make from foam card or directly from foam blocks cut to the appropriate shape and textured with sand or filler to give the correct appearance. Note that lots of bunkers show the imprints of the wooden boards that were used to hold the concrete when they were built, and you can get a similar effect with filler and balsa wood pressed into it.

You can of course also find a good number of bunker kits and ready made bunkers to use if you don't fancy having a go making one yourself. If you wanted to make your own, you could adopt the foam carving technique I used in my simple buildings post - easily adaptable I'd say, and given the simple shape of most bunkers probably quite quick to build.

After hills, trees and woods are probably the next most common and useful item to have as scenery on your wargames battlefield. Perfect for hiding behind, blocking line of sight or ambushes from the woods (Wood Elves anyone?) they are all round useful, especially as terrain for Warhammer, WW2 or other historic wargaming. Whilst the battlefields of the 41st century may be tree-light, there are plenty of opportunities for alien trees and vegetation in a Warhammer 40K battle too - you can let you imagination run riot. Trees can be fairly easily made (see my post on the subject -I made some trees from the vine tomatoes grew on and some reindeer moss) from wire and moss, or for an even easier approach, bought from wargames scenery or model railway scenery suppliers. Games Workshop make a range of plastic trees but they are pricey - I've found some good ones on eBay before now. Once you have your trees it is easy to make a wood, with a foam / MDF base, the trees and reindeer moss for bushes. Add sand to the base, paint it, flock and some static grass and you are done!
Or you can even buy some ready made woods from wargames scenery suppliers. They come up for sale relatively regularly on eBay so keep an eye out.

Whatever gaming system you play, at some point you are going to want a building or two as terrain for your battlefield. Buildings provide cover, protect units, direct the enemy into traps, can be garrisoned with your troops and generally add to the atmosphere of a game. The bleak future world of Warhammer 40K looks great with bunkers, bastions and ruined buldings in general. Bulidings add greatly to Warhammer fantasy battlefields too, especially if like me you like to tell stories with your games - that Empire farmhouse or village is just ripe for a raid from the Beastmen or Orcs and Goblins. With the 8th Edition of Warhammer out now, specific types of building feature in the rules such as a Wizards Tower or Dwarf Brewery (I'm making one of those at the moment).

So, given that buildings considerably enhance your wargames scenery, how do you go about getting some? You can of course make your own (and see my simple building how-to elsewhere on the site) or buy them ready made, or as a halfway house in kit form. If building your own, the traditional method of making them is to build the structure from foam card, which allows for the possibility of taking the roof off to station your models in the building itself. I made my last building and am making my Dwarf brewery directly from foam blocks ( though these obviously can't be directly garrisoned by your models). You can also short cut the process by buying kit buildings for your wargames terrain. Games Workshop make a nice range of plastic kit buildings for Warhammer and Warhammer 40K but they are quite pricey. You can also buy kits of pre-cast plaster (usually dental plaster) bricks and blocks to assemble your own buildings from, either just as is or in a kit to build a specific building. Hirst Arts frequently provide the molds for these and produce a wide range of them. Kits of blocks are usually produced by Hirst Arts licensed sellers and frequently sold on eBay. A well put together and painted example of these makes fantastically atmospheric scenery for a wargame.

Whether you build your own from scratch, from a kit or choose a ready made building - you really do have to add some buildings to your supply of terrain for your wargames.

Wargames Scenery – Ruined Buildings

One of the most evocative types of wargames terrain you can have is the ruined building. Whether it is a ruined French house in a WW2 setting, a collapsed watch tower from Lord of The Rings, a burnt out half timbered Empire inn from Warhammer or the blasted remnants of a Warhammer 40K Imperial bastion, there is nothing that works so well on a miniature battlefield as a ruin. They are great at providing cover for your troops and look very evocative, speaking of ages long past or battles recently fought. Makers of wargames terrain have fully bought into this - hence why there are so many ruined buildings and building kits available. Although it can be easy to make some types of ruined buildings yourself, representing rubble, damaged floors, piles of stone and so on can be harder than building an entire building in some ways. I find that ruined buildings are one sort of wargames scenery that I am happy to buy ready made. After all, many come requiring assembly and painting so you still have opportunities for creativity in painting or modifying them to your taste, for example adding bushes and grass growing out of the walls with reindeer moss and static grass.

Even if you do decide to make your own from scratch, looking at other examples people have made is always good for inspiration and ideas.

Walls, fences, barriers - all useful (vital?) items of wargames scenery / terrain for provide your troops cover on the battlefield, whether you are playing warhammer, warhammer 40K or any other system - the look of the barrier may change, but its purpose will be the same. Short sections of wall, hedge or fence are useful bits of terrain to have in the terrain box for your games as they can be used in so many ways - as individual isolated bits of terrain, joined together to make longer structures and so on. Providing cover and directing movement about the battlefield, they are simple to make (see my post in the projects section) but if you prefer there are a wide range of different styles available for you to buy either fully made, made but needing painting or in full kit form. Have a look and see what ideas you can come up with for your battlefields and wargames.

No wargames battlefield is complete without a hill or two, be it WW2, Napoleonic or Warhammer or Warhammer 40k. Hills provide somewhere for your ranged weapons or missile troops to sit to give them vantage over the battlefield, somewhere for units to hide behind. Attacking forces have to assault up the hill making things more difficult for them. Every game should have at least one hill IMHO. If I didn't have a hill, where would my Dwarf Thunderers go?! Although simple to make, you may prefer to buy yours ready made, in which case have a look at these examples of hill goodness. Even if you are making your own, I find that seeing what is out there is often good for ideas anyway!

Not everyone has the time or inclination to make all their own wargames scenery / terrain from scratch, and there is a whole industry out there that has grown up to support them, from the heavy weights such as Games Workshop to one man bands hand crafting or casting their own scenery to sell on eBay. Now, I enjoy making my scenery, but there are times when I think it would be great to have a such and such item of scenery for a particular Warhammer scenario I want to play, but it has to join the back of the queue of ideas to be made. This is when off the shelf scenery appeals!

There are many types of kit terrain available. Games Workshop make a range of buildings and I have built their fortified manor kit. Great quality and looks fantastic when done, but not cheap. You can also get lots of cast pieces, either in resin or dental plaster - the Hirst Arts range exemplifies this approach, possibly cheaper but requiring some effort to put together. Buying your terrain ready made or in kit form is a great timesaver when perhaps you don't have the time to build everything you want yourself. You can of course add to kit terrain with your own modifications, or add bits of kits to terrain you are building. I find that adding the odd bought bits & pieces to some scenery I am making can a) enhance the result and sometimes b) make it easier to build in the first place. As an example, at the time of writing this I am building a Dwarf Brewery to use with my son in 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy battles. Its made of a foam building (see my post on the subject), with stone effect carved into it and part of a plastic bottle for the brewing kettle, combined with bits of balsa wood and so on. Now, I needed some pipe and would ideally have liked some valves / control wheels. I wondered what I could use, but in the end for ease I found a great set of pipes/valves on eBay designed specifically to be used in wargames terrain. Perfect! I also got myself some barrels cheaply to 'dress'' the finished scenery with. Maybe not the purist approach of building it all yourself, but in the end I think I will have a better scenery piece as a result.

eBay is a great place to find huge range of wargames scenery / terrain pieces and accessories for your own terrain pieces, for all game systems from Warhammer / Warhammer 40K to FOW etc. With that in mind, I've set up a mew category on the site to cover readymade and kit wargames scenery, with posts covering all the popular terrain types. How to make simple buildings for wargames scenery

Making a single story building - Empire / medieval / Bree style for Warhammer Fantasy, LOTR or the whatever your game is!

This project grew out of a couple of things, firstly my desire to make some buildings for my son's (and my) Warhammer games and as an experiment to see if I could make buildings quickly. The traditional way to make buildings like this is from foam card – plan / draw out the walls, roof, cut them out, then assemble, texture piant and so on. I wondered if I could make something out of blocks of foam for the basic building shape. Obviously doing this precludes you from removing the roof and actually putting a unit inside your building, but in my case I wasn't particularly bothered by this - I just wanted to get a building on the table quickly and cheaply. I decided to go for a simple single storey building that could pass as a farm house or maybe even a barn.

Using my hot wire cutters, I cut out an oblong block of 2” thick foam for the ground floor, approx 5” long. I cut out a block the same length but slightly wider (for overhanging eaves) from 1” foam to form the roof. On this I drew the pitch of the roof. I then cut down the lines of the triangle to make the roof (using hot wire cutters). The base and roof block want to have fairly stright walls, so I gave them a light sanding with a sanding block, though some undulations here will probably enhance the finished effect in what is meant to be a simple and rustic building. The two blocks were then glued together using PVA round the edges of the roof and base, with some cocktail stick pieces pushed into the ground floor block for added joint strength.

This completes the basic building shape – nice and quick!

For the door frame I used my hot wire sculpting tool to incise lines for the frame. The frame itself was made from balsa wood cut to shape to fit. I whilttled little pieces of the wood off to make the effect of rough carved wood. The door itself was made from another piece of balsa wood, scored with a knife to make the individual planks. You can also try using a ball point pen to 'push' tracks into the softwood. I decided for speed that the door opened inwards so you wouldn't be able to see the hinges. If you preferred, hinges could be made from plastic card and wire or brass rod. For a handle, you could see what your bits box had to offer, or fasion one from wire (e.g. A ring like you might find on old church doors).

Windows can be made in simliar fashion, with an incision for the window sill and frame – these being made from balsa as before. I would imagine that in a relatively lowly building like this, there most likely wouldn't have been glass in the windows – glass being expensive to produce, so the window would most likely just be wooden bars, with shutters. The shutters can be made from scored balsa wood as before and modelled open or closed – if you do them closed you don't need to make the window of course... The hinges can be card or plastic card pieces with pieces of brasss rod or thickish wire to represent the hinge pin. If you go for the open shutter approach, the bars in the window can be made from balsa wood, whitlled as before to give a worn, rough hewn look to the timber. With no glass the window would have likely been small.

I then textured the walls and eaves, using brush on filler, leaving brush marks and stippling the filler on in places to givea a feel of rough rendered walls like cob or wattle and daub / lime plaster. This brush on filler is good stuff for applying texture to scenery pieces. You could use thicker filler thinned with a little water or mix your own powdered filler if you prefer

The roof could be tiled, pantiled or thatched as you like. For the pantile roof, I cut strips from a piece of corrugated card packaging (across the corrugations) and glued these to the roof. The ridge tiles were made from a stip of corrugated card cut lengthways – to give one long tile effect. The underside of this was scored lightly so it would bend to glue over the ridge, and the tiles themselves cut into it by gently cutting through the cardboard ridge at intervals to give the effect of individual tiles. Twisitng the knife slightly in the slit after you have made it opens up the gap a fraction. Its a good idea to brush a PVA glue and water mix over the 'tiles' when they are complete to stiffen and seal the card somewhat before painting.

For slate style tiles cut stips of thin carboard and cut individual tiles from this, trying to randomise the effect a bit (e.g. slightly differing sizes, snip the corners off some). These can then be glued to the roof. An alternative that needs slightly less effort is to make the strips slightly wider than the tiles are to be, and then cut slits in the card to make the individual tiles as before – just don't cut right the way through. The strips can then be glued to the roof, each one overlapping slightly to hide the uncut portion of the strip. The final (top) strip can then be hidden by the ridge tile. If you take the time to vary the tiles a bit as you cut them, this can look very effective – and is a lot easier than sticking on hundreds of individual tiles...

To paint the building I used a dark brown acrylic paint as a combined undercoat/base coat – I went for a very dirty / old look. This was then (heavily) drybrushed with Dheneb stone and then Bleached Bone for the dirty off white look. The effect was finalised with a heavy wash of Devlan Mud, GW's miracle in a pot...It just brings it all together. The roof pantiles were done with a mix of brown, mechrite red and bleached bone to make a reasonable terracota. They were then given a light drybrush of the same with extra bleached bone added and then wahsed with badab black.

You could leave the building without a base or cut a base for the building from hardboard, thin MDF or card. This could be coated in places with brush on filler, shaped and stippled to make the effect of mud. Gravel and sand can also be added to the base. You could drag some cart wheeels through the filler before it dries to make cart tracks and maybe use a minature to make foot prints in the mud too. Paint – base brown and drybrush other browns with maybe a hint of green (manure sometimes has a greenish tinge), flock, static grass and maybe add some bushes (I use reindeer moss for this, readily available from most scenery suppliers) – job done.

There you go, the basics of a simple Empire farm style building that you can use in your Warhammer fantasy games – or Lord of the Rings War of the Ring / Strategy Battle games or any other gaming system where a medieval style building is required. The basic idea could be modified – make it a barn by adding bigger barn doors, carve stone effecct into the outside wall for a stone building, or glue brick effecct plasic card onto the outside for a brick building. I've nearly finished a stone effect building in the same method and quite fancy having a go at castle walls or a watch tower in similar style.

It has long been said that experience is the best teacher, and this holds particularly true for this book by Iain Dickie. Iain was editor of Miniature Wargames Magazine for some 25 years, and in his new book he draws on his many years of experience in the hobby to provide one of the best step by step approaches to miniature wargaming that I have ever seen.

This sounds like a great book - have a look at the full review for more details, but it does sound
great, with plenty on building your own terrain and even ships! Wargaming can be an expensive hobby so anything that may help reduce the cost whilst not reducing the fun (or maybe even increasing it). If it at least encourages you to build one item of terrain rather than buy it at say, Games Workshop prices, it may well pay for itself. I think I will be buying a copy.

Some vac formed craters that look as if they would work nicely in lots of different scenarios with a bit of careful painting. I've not tried bought craters before having made some with a hot wire cutter and some EPS foam (styrofoam). I have recently bought some simple vac formed buildings though which I will review when i've had a chance to build and paint them.

How to make simple barriers for Warhammer terrain

With the 8th edition of the Warhammer fantasy battle rules, terrain moved a bit more centre stage with many specific types of terrain mentioned. One of these is barriers - which are very useful things to have around anyway, given the ciover they provide for troops behinfd them. With that in mind, I thought some straight forward barriers would be of use. There are many ways you can make barriers, from stone walls, to hedges, to fences and so on. I decided to go for rendered walls, in orther words, sometihng that could respresent plastered brick, or cob walls. I also decided to make a number of straight walls, plus some right angled corners as this would give a lot of flexibility in setting them up on the table

You will need:

A sheet of 1" thick polystyrene, either the expanded (beaded) type as I used, or the more expensive (but better) extruded type.
Ideally a hot wire cutter to cut the polysterene. Failing that, a sharp breadknife or hacksaw blade sould do the job nicely.
Some household filler - I find the brush on hairline crack filler is ideal
Basing material - you can use MDF (best), hardboard (good) or cardboard (OK). Hardboard and cardboard are easiest to work with.
Paints - an undercoat colour, base coat and top coat for dry brushing, You can use a wash too if you like.
Flock / static grass / reindeer moss / sand / gravel - or whatever else you like to finish the bases.
Paintbrushes, cutting mat, PVA (white) glue etc.

Mark out on your polystyrene suitable lengths and widths for your wall(s). If you want them to be less than 1" tall, you can always cut them down after they have been cut out. Cut out each individual wall section and then repeat the process for the corner pieces. As you can see, I used my Hot Wire Foam Factory scroll table foam cutter, which makes this quite easy to do.

Cut out your basing material and glue the foam walls to it. I made the bases very small and finished them at the ends of the walls so they didn't overlap. This makes it easier to butt up the sections of wall together, giving you great flexibility when setting out terrain on your table.

Next, it is time to texture the walls. Depending on what you want to represent, there are a number of ways you can do this. You can use paint that already has texture medium in it, you can coat the polystyrene with PVA glue and then sand if you are going for a stone finish (if you are doing this, you will want to cut some stone blocks lines into the surface of the foam, a biro is ideal for this). In my case, to get the rendered effect, I went for some brush on Polyfilla hairline crack filler. You could use any household decorators filler, but you may need to thin it with a little water first. I applied the filler using a brush, being careful to cover all the polystyrene. You can use the brush marks to your advantage if you like, making it seem like roughly applied plaster or maybe the earth surface of a cob wall.

Once the filler is dry, you can start the painting process. I applied two coats of a dark brown acrylic paint by brush, but you could use spray paint if you have covered all the foam - polystyrene is melted by many spray paints. Once the base coast was dry, I applied a heavy dry brush of Games Workshop bleached bone, as I wanted a pale cream look that had been weathered over the years and also got covered in mud - the dark brown showing through worked well for this. To enhance the effect I applied an overall Games Workshop Devlan mud wash, followed by heavy patches of wash only in some places.

I then finished the bases off with some of various Javis flocks and patches of static grass. I painted the bases with PVA and applied the flock / grass to this. I also put small amounts of the grass on odd places on the walls themselves to look like grasses were growing out of them. Finally I glued some reindeer moss on as bushes up against some of the walls. It may look like there is a bit of a mix of different flocks being used (because there is!) but I was just experimenting to see what they all looked like.

You can of course go as wild as you like here - its always good to raid the bits box and add a few items to dress your scenery with, such as a shield and spear leaning against the wall. Little touches like this make all the difference.

So there you have it, a quick and simple way to make a flexible set of walls as barriers for your Warhammer Fantasy games. The picture below shows some of the walls in use with a simple barn / hovel I made in the same style (how to post coming soon) , making a little farmstead, such as you might find in an outlying Empire village. Of course, the techniques in this article are not limited to just scenery for Warhammer games, but could be used for any suitable period - ancients or Napoleonic games, for example. Over to you!

Interesting discussion on what to use for painting your wargames terrain as paint in pots designed for painting your miniatures can get seriously expensive. I second the tip about using household emulsion paint samplers - I've got a dark grey and a pebble grey like that I use all the time. The pots are cheap and although small will last a while unless you a doing an entire game board. Hobby and automotive spray paints are good too (but remember they eat foam).

My dad flipped the cooler upside down, cut down the height a few inches and stuck the lid on top and painted it gray.* The windows are ordinary vinyl molding you'd find in a generic office building cut to shape and detailed with a sharpie marker. Popsicle sticks make up the window shutters and the gate. The gate is detailed with some ordinary black twine. I don't think my dad had any idea at the time that he was supporting what would become at times a border-line obsession for me, but nevertheless I'm still appreciative of his efforts to this day.

I am kind of hoping that my son, the indirect instigator of my terrain building may one day look back on a piece of terrain that I made for him with similar thoughts. As a dad you try and support them in whatever they do, hopefully without taking over and leaving them with their own space to develop in whatever hobby it may be. Not strictly a terrain building article perhaps, but you could always use it for inspiration and it does go with my favourite theme of reusing everything you can find in your scenery building projects. How To Make Simple Trees For Wargames Scenery

This is the first real project I've got round to posting on the site, showing how to make simple trees. It fits with my philosophy of using things that you can find around the house wherever possible. In this case, I used the stem from a bunch of grapes and the vine from some vine ripened tomatoes to form the trunks of the trees. Why? because I like to reuse stuff and because they actually look very natural and 'real' as the tree trunks. They have that natural look that is not so easy to get from wire - because they are natural!

The fist thing to note is that they should be allowed to dry out thoroughly before use - I find that leaving them in the conservatory speeds the process up, or you could try the airing cupboard or the like. When dry they will be less flexible and generally tougher.

For the leaves I decided to use reindeer moss - widely available from wargames scenery suppliers or eBay. It makes good foliage and bushes and should be in every scenery makers materials box. You'll also need some PVA glue, a craft knife, flock and / or static grass and a suitable material for the base. You can use MDF or hardboard for this, but I decided to go with foam as I thought I'd make my trees on rocky outcrops so they could be used on a hill if I wanted. One stem worked well as windswept tree exposed on a hill, so I went with it. I hence used some high density foam for my bases. You'll also need some paint for the trunks and the base.

Here you can see the basic raw materials - grape stem on the left, tomato vine on the right. The grape stem wasn't ideally dried I think, but there you go - impatient! Its best to trim the stems to suit where they held the grapes. I used a pair of scissors to just trim back the stems a little bit so it would fit with the moss better. Once this is done, it is a case of selecting suitable bits of moss to fit on the 'branches' of the stems. I tried several pieces out per branch, wrapping them round where I could and generally trying for a good fit. It may be necessary to trim the moss a bit. You are looking for something that says 'tree' to you! When you are happy with the fit, coat the branches liberally with PVA and wrap the moss round them, ideally holding it in place until the PVA starts to hold it.

You can see this in progress for the tomato vine here. Just keep on going until the entire 'tree' is done.

Below is the grape vine tree. I've added a bit of flock to the leaf canopy of this one - I dipped / bushed the outside of the moss with glue and then dipped it in a pot of flock to give a leaves / blossom effect. I only did this in places so the effect was subtle. I used a mix of Javis dark green flock and their summer meadow flock (which has bright flower effect pieces in it too).

I left the trees aside to dry, and started on the rocky bases. I used some high density foam for this, an off cut I had from another project. I cut out two pieces, trying to shape the surface in a rocky effect using a hot wire cutter (in fact a Hot Wire Foam Factory hot knife cutter). You can use a bread knife or the like if you don't have a hot wire cutter - but if you do a lot of foam based scenery making they're a great investment (Review coming soon).

Once cut out, I shaped them a bit more and added holes for the tree trunks to sit in. I then textured them - coating them with PVA and then sprinkling on various grades of sand, from coarse basing sand to fine block paving sand (good stuff for bases by the way).

Once done, they were painted, using various Games Workshop paints - Chaos black undercoat, then progressively lighter dry brushing with Charandon Granite, Codex Grey, Fortress Grey and Skull White.

The trees were then glued in place - I didn't use PVA for this due to the likely drying time, using my hot glue gun instead. This is ideal for sticking things that need strength and instant grab.

Finally, I decided not to paint the trunks of the trees, but instead leave them relatively natural, though I did give them a wash with Games Workshop Devlan Mud to give them some extra depth. I then put patches of PVA glue on the bases and added some static grass for the finishing touch. You can see in the pictures I used an off cut of grape vine stem to make a small tree with an autumnal colour using yellow coloured moss.

Here you can see the finished result on a hill I already had. I'm quite pleased for a quick set of cheap trees! Let me know what you think. I will certainly be making more.
